Very rare box pews

Holy Trinity church is not far from York Minster. It was the parish church of Goodramgate. The building dates from the 12th Century. The chapel you see in the photos dates from the 13th century and the South aisle dates from the 14th. The church was decalred redundant although it remained consecrated. Because of this, the box pews were not removed and the triple tier pulpit remained in tact.

Whilst it was not a legally recognised wedding, Holy Trinity was the first church where two openly declared lesbians were married. That was on Easter 1834 when Anne Lister took Holy Communion with Ann Walker. Whilst it was not a wedding as such, everyone present knew the significance of the event.
